Orienteering at Scammonden:

A new permanent orienteering course has been installed at Scammonden which has been designed to give you a taster of orienteering as part of your visit to the Activity Centre.

A map of the area around Scammonden Water, with the orienteering course marked on, is freely available to be downloaded from our website using the link below, or copies are available to borrow during your stay.

The Courses:

Short West Easier: 1.6km, 30m ascent. All controls are visible from the path network.

Short East Harder: 1.6km, 55m ascent. Some controls are off the path network.

Long Low: 4.5km, 100m ascent – a full circuit of Scammonden Water – clockwise

Long High: 5km, 150m ascent – a full circuit of Scammonden Water – anti-clockwise at a higher level

Access to the area is by courtesy of Yorkshire Water and their tenants. The course is maintained by Scammonden Activity Centre.

East Pennine Orienteering Club’s 1:5,000 and 1:7,500 maps of the area around Scammonden Water, with all orienteering control posts marked on, is freely available to be downloaded from East Pennine Orienteering Club’s website using the link.

These courses start and finish at the Yorkshire Water Car Park close to the junction of O’Cot Lane and Sledge Gate.
